Recent purchases: March 2015

Now and then I'll put up a list of the latest things I've bought and give some quick thoughts about them with a link to a song. Most of these will eventually be reviewed anyway. Read them after the jump.

Steven Wilson - Hand Cannot Erase (Blu-Ray)

Been waiting for this one for a while now, as usual SW does not dissapoint with the Blu-Ray audio version of his latest album. It's a lot different to his past work in the sense that it's less experimental/improvisational and more straightforward. It reminds me a lot of his work with Porcupine Tree, so if you were sad when they split up, give this a listen. The hi-res surround mix is top-notch, everything has its own place, the harmony vocals come from all around and there are some cool swirly effects.

Yes - Relayer (2014 re-release)

Steven Wilson has been busy remixing classic '70s prog records from original master tapes for the past few years. Yes are the newest band to receive his magic touch. Relayer comes as the last record off Yes' peak period, the last to contain their layered, symphonic epics. Hearing its three monster tracks in surround means that the layers upon layers of keyboards, vocals and guitars are given a new clarity. This makes their staggering songwriting skills shine all the brighter.

Jute Gyte - Ressentiment

Now this is an odd one. Jute Gyte is a one-man black metal project that is notable for its incredible number of releases and use of microtonal scales. Instead of 12 tones as in convential music, Jute Gyte uses 24 tone scales, so that's twice as many possible notes to play with. To you and me, this type of tonality is best defined as 'fucking weird'. The music beats you relentlessly with seemingly melting chords and constantly changing speeds. Occasionally you get melodies that almost sound normal, but then they decay into madness once more.

That's it for now!
